VERNON HILLS, Ill. – Nov. 8, 2004 – In the two years it has been available, Mitsubishi Electric Automation’s Q Series Automation Platform has raised the standard for packaging applications. A unique, multidisciplinary automation platform, the Q Series combines all the elements of common packaging systems into one compact, integrated, high performance system.
“We believe that no other automation platform available today offers such a broad scope of high performance automation possibilities by combining sequence, motion, process and PC-based control on a single compact rack based system,” said John Browett, product marketing manager for rack-based controllers and automation networks. “By taking this approach, Mitsubishi Electric Automation can offer a system that seamlessly integrates all machine logic with complex motion profiles. Packaging systems built with the Q Series perform at their highest levels of efficiency and reliability. Instruction execution takes place in nanoseconds, allowing 1k/step of program to be executed in microseconds. The Q Series’ wide range of advanced features is flexible enough to manage even the most complex packaging application, and minimize downtime on the line.
With an eye on current and future automation trends, Mitsubishi Electric Automation integrated full 100base-T Ethernet and Internet capability, including FTP, email and HTTP[j1] functions into the platform. Support for all popular open network technologies such as CC-Link, DeviceNet and Profibus is also included.
The Q Series places a full-featured PC directly on the controller rack, meaning that the complete spectrum of PC software is also available, including third party languages such as Microsoft’s ® Visual C++ and Visual Basic® languages.
The physical size of the Q Series has also added to its popularity. Despite its broad array of powerful features, the average Q Series system takes no more panel space than the average micro PLC.
Mitsubishi Electric Automation’s Q Series:
- Allows development time to be
dramatically reduced through its innovative multiple program/multiple user
operating system. By modularizing the application into multiple separate
programs, multiple developers are able to work on a project simultaneously, thus
reducing lead-time. Moreover, future project timelines can be reduced by reusing
existing program code. Once in operation, modular program code can reduce
downtime by allowing attention to be concentrated on the relevant programs.
Further, multiple users may access the CPU simultaneously, so troubleshooting
and debugging tasks are no longer dependent on a single programmer.

Mitsubishi Electric Automation’s advanced development suite, based around the GX
Developer Windows™-based system. The suite’s simulation capabilities allow
developers to verify the correct operation of their systems without the need for
physical hardware, while an integrated USB port improves program download speed.
GX-Developer also eliminates much of the busywork associated with configuring a
complex system, so developers can concentrate on actual application code. The Q
Series offers a suite of tools specifically designed to make system
configuration --- from analog modules through to Ethernet communications --- as
easy as checking off a list.
- Controls up to 96 axes of motion
from one system with an innovative programming system that allows the designer
to create a virtual mechanical system, eliminating costly mechanical systems
such as line shafts, cams and clutches, etc.
- Offers full support for Mitsubishi
Electric Automation’s high performance SSCNET system, to allow a full line of
digital servos to be controlled in a daisy chain fashion from the controller,
and reducing the need for complex wiring harnesses.
